Contextual Help & Tooltips
Where to find inline guidance — and the actual keyboard shortcuts
Cine Power Planner has several layers of in-product guidance: tooltip text on individual buttons, the Tips & Tricks help article, the assistant, walkthrough tours, and the full Help Panel. This article points to each layer and lists the keyboard shortcuts that are actually wired into the app.
Where Inline Help Lives
Several layers of guidance, each with a different surface.
- Assistant button in a project
- Every project workspace carries a sparkle button in the bottom-right corner, next to the chat button when you are collaborating. It opens the same assistant that lives in Help → Assistant, without leaving the project — and it is the same conversation: ask something here, open Help later, and the transcript is still there. It works even with no AI provider configured, in which case it shows you the matching knowledge-base sections directly. Under an answer you may also see a “Take me there” button that opens the screen the answer is about — the Auto-Gear tab, Contacts, the device library. Those buttons only navigate. The assistant can also OFFER to change something — rename the project, add an auto-gear rule (created switched off), set the delivery specs, turn on collaboration, or invite someone by email — but it never does it on its own: you get an itemised “Confirm this change” card naming exactly what would change, nothing happens until you press “Make this change”, and the card tells you how that change is taken back — for the first three a single entry in the project's undo history, and for the two that reach beyond your own project, plainly what the route back really is: “Disable collaboration” for collaboration, and none for an invitation email, which you confirm with “I understand this cannot be undone” and “Yes, send it”. It can only propose a change you asked for in your own words; a value it did not hear from you is refused before you are ever shown it. Proposals come from a written AI answer, so they appear only while AI answers are on — Help → Assistant itself never offers a change.
- Button tooltips
- Short hover-text on individual buttons and icons. Best for 'what does this control do?' moments. With a mouse or trackpad they appear after a short pause of about 0.15 seconds, and pressing any key hides them. Using the control closes its tooltip — a click, or a tap on a touchscreen, activates the button rather than leaving its label hanging over whatever the button just opened. Labels that are not buttons, such as the 'Progress' caption in a project header, still open on tap and fade on their own.
- Greyed-out buttons
- A button that is greyed out tells you why when you hover over it, and what to do to unlock it: fill in a missing field, tick a confirmation, unlock the project, or wait until a teammate finishes editing. This works across the app: every tab of an open project, the shot list and schedule, call sheets, sub-rentals, owned gear, contacts, rental houses, contracts, accounting, time tracking, Data Management, the camera and PDF tools, and Settings. In a project it names the exact reason: the project is open in another tab or on another device (click Take over editing), you have view-only access, the project or its budget is locked, or a teammate is editing that field. A touchscreen has no hover, so there the tooltip does not appear: check for an empty or highlighted field instead.
- Tips & Tricks article
- A curated cheat-sheet inside the Help Panel ('Tips & Tricks') for the highest-leverage shortcuts and patterns.
- Walkthrough tours
- Step-by-step interactive tours that highlight elements as they explain them. Launch via the 'Guided Tours' tab inside the Help Panel.
- Help Panel
- Sidebar → Help, or press
?(jumps to the shortcuts page) or Cmd/Ctrl + / (jumps to the Help home). Full searchable knowledge base with all articles, plus the Assistant, Guided Tours and Shortcuts tabs and the Support & Feedback tab for bug reports.
Tips
- Press
?from anywhere outside an input to jump straight to the keyboard-shortcuts page. - Walkthroughs are the fastest path to learning a complex feature — they highlight UI as they describe it.
- Tooltips are short by design; if a tooltip doesn't answer your question, the matching help article will.
Keyboard Shortcuts That Exist App-Wide
These shortcuts are wired globally. Both Cmd (macOS) and Ctrl (Windows/Linux) work as the modifier — the code accepts either, so you can ignore platform differences. The modifier shortcuts also work while the caret is in a text field; only the bare ? waits until you leave the field.
?(no modifier)- Open the Help page directly on the 'Keyboard Shortcuts' article. Ignored when focus is in a text input, and suppressed while a modal is already open so it doesn't steal focus from the dialog.
- Cmd/Ctrl + /
- Open the Help home (
/help). Use this when you want the article grid rather than a specific shortcut reference. - Cmd/Ctrl + K
- Open Quick Switcher — the unified palette that searches projects, devices, contacts, recent items, and every page in the app.
- Cmd/Ctrl + P
- Also opens Quick Switcher. Historically opened a separate 'projects' palette; that palette has been folded into Quick Switcher, so the two shortcuts share one canonical destination.
- Cmd/Ctrl + Alt + N
- Start a new project. Navigates to the dashboard and opens the new-project dialog. Works from any screen.
- Cmd/Ctrl + S
- Force-flush to IndexedDB and the OPFS backup. The app already autosaves after every change, so this is mostly a manual sanity check before closing the browser. Works even inside text inputs.
- Cmd/Ctrl + F
- Inside a project workspace, focuses the in-project category search field. In the Device Library it focuses the library's own search box, and on the
/searchpage it puts the caret in the search field. Anywhere else, navigates to the global/searchpage. The app intentionally overrides the browser's native find-in-page everywhere it handles this shortcut. - Escape
- Close the active modal, dialog, dropdown, or Quick Switcher. The most useful single key in the app — it always backs you out of whatever you opened.
Tips
- Cmd/Ctrl + Z undoes and Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Z (or Ctrl + Y) redoes across an open project workspace — gear-list and category edits — but not on the dashboard or in a read-only project. The Floor Plan editor and the Budget Report panel each keep their own separate undo history. For deletions older than the current history, restore from Settings → Backup & Data, or — with Cloud Sync on — sign out and back in to pull the previous cloud version.
- If you need browser-native find-in-page (Cmd/Ctrl + F on a route the app overrides), use the browser menu's 'Find' entry instead.
- Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + R is the browser's hard-reload — useful if an image or signed URL ever fails to load after switching networks. It is not an app shortcut.
Common Flows at a Glance
Pointers to the matching help article for the most common day-one tasks.
- Create a new project — Cmd/Ctrl + Alt + N, or see 'Getting Started' → Creating your first project.
- Add equipment to a list — see 'Getting Started' → Adding gear to a project, or 'Device Library' for advanced add patterns.
- Export a PDF — see 'PDF Tools' (operating on incoming PDFs) and 'Getting Started' → Exporting PDFs (issuing a gear-list PDF).
- Set up cloud sync — see 'Cloud Sync & Accounts'. First-time users go through an explicit consent prompt; you can withdraw consent at any time from Settings → Security & Privacy → Privacy & Legal → Cloud Sync.
- Use a template — see 'Templates' (route
/templates, reached from the dashboard or via Quick Switcher). - Find a complete shortcut reference — press
?or open the 'Keyboard Shortcuts' article from the Help Panel. - Restore from backup — see 'Backup & Restore'.
When the tooltip text is too short to help, open the Help Panel and search for the matching article — tooltips show a title and a short explanation only, with no link out.
