Focus Pulling Simulator
Train the 1st AC's craft — pull focus on cue, hit your marks, and build muscle memory.
In development
A gamified trainer for pulling focus — the job of the focus puller. You work a virtual follow-focus wheel through real cinematic scenes, keeping the shot sharp as subjects move and the story cuts between them. This is an early preview of the training path; the playable game is coming soon.
The training path
Levels build from a still frame to the hardest moving shots on set.
- 1
Hold a static scene
A locked-off subject. Learn the follow-focus wheel and witness marks, and keep a still face critically sharp wide open.
- 2
Rack between two faces
Two people at different distances. Pull cleanly from A to B on cue and land the mark without overshooting or hunting.
- 3
Catch the turn
One person is talking; the other turns a shoulder toward camera. Anticipate the beat and rack to them exactly as they land.
- 4
Follow a walk to camera
A subject walks toward the lens as depth of field collapses. Ride focus continuously and stay sharp through the closest, hardest metres.
- 5
Go pro
Whip-pans to a new subject, handheld and Steadicam moves, long-lens compression, and low-light wide-open work across rising difficulty tiers.
What's coming
- Cinematic scenes with real optical bokeh — proper character design and multiple rooms, not placeholder art.
- Difficulty tiers that open the aperture, lengthen the lens and speed up the action as you improve.
- Physically accurate depth of field driven by the same optics engine as the DoF Simulator.
- Live sharpness feedback and precision-and-timing scoring — perfect / soft / miss, streaks, and a record of your improvement.
