Offline-first guidance for safe gear lists.
Quick Switcher
The keyboard-first command palette
The Quick Switcher is a small window that lets you jump to any project, gear item, contact, device, page, tool or action with a few keystrokes — and switch the theme without leaving the page. It works from anywhere in the app and is the fastest way to navigate once you're used to it.
Opening it
Two equivalent shortcuts and a button.
- Cmd/Ctrl + K — anywhere in the app, even while the cursor is in a text field.
- Cmd/Ctrl + P — opens the same window. It used to open a separate projects palette, which is now part of the Quick Switcher.
- The Search button (⌘K) in most page headers opens it with a click or a tap — the way in on a phone or tablet without a keyboard. On the Search page, the 'Quick search (⌘K)' button does the same.
- Click anywhere outside the window, or press Esc, to close it without picking a result.
Searching
Start typing as soon as the window opens — the search box already has the cursor. Results filter as you type and are grouped into labelled sections, so the list stays scannable.
- Forgiving matching: the same matcher as the Search page tolerates small typos, a missing or extra space, and gear shorthand such as 'tx' for transmitter.
- Projects match from the first character, by name or client. Gear items, contacts, devices, owned gear, rental houses and time-tracking projects join from the second character on.
- Highlights: where your typed text appears in a result's name, it is marked, so you can see why the result is there.
- Ghost text: when what you typed is the start of a known name, the rest appears greyed out after the cursor. Press Tab to accept it.
- Did you mean …? — when a word is one letter off a known name, a line above the results offers the correction. Click it to search for that instead.
- Top match: when the best result is a project, a contact or an owned-gear item, a card above the list shows it with one-click buttons — Open, plus New tab for a project in the browser and Email for a contact with an e-mail address.
- Typing a page's name ('settings', 'calendar') puts that page first, ahead of any project or item that happens to match.
Tips
- Two or three characters of a name is usually enough to land your match at the top of the list.
- Projects you edited recently, and ones you often pick from the same page, rank a little higher. That personal boost lives only in this browser.
- If you manage a lot of projects, type the client name or the date prefix — the date-prefix naming convention pays off here.
Keyboard navigation inside the palette
Once the palette is open, the keyboard does everything.
- ↓ / ↑ — move down / up through the results, across sections. The highlight stops at the first and the last result.
- Enter — open the highlighted result. The first result is highlighted as soon as you type.
- Tab — accept the greyed-out completion, when one is shown.
- Esc — close without selecting.
- Continuing to type narrows the list; deleting characters broadens it. The footer shows the result count and the key hints.
Tips
- The full cycle is: open → type two letters → Enter. With practice it takes no longer than reaching for the mouse.
- Mouse clicks and taps on a result work too — the keyboard is just faster once it's a habit.
Command mode and scope chips
Type a greater-than sign and a space (> ) at the very start to switch into command mode, or add a scope chip to search one kind of result only.
- Default mode (no prefix): everything appears — projects, items, contacts, devices, pages, tools, settings tabs and actions.
- Command mode (
>prefix): pages and actions only — 'New Project', 'Settings', 'Help & Documentation', the tools, the settings tabs, the theme and the export and AI shortcuts. Projects, items, contacts, devices and PDF tools are left out, and the placeholder changes to 'Type a command...'. - Scope chips: type one anywhere in the query —
#project(also finds time-tracking projects),@contactor#contact,#itemor#gear,#library,#owned,#rental; each also has atype:spelling such astype:library. The chip is taken out of the text, a pill such asin: Projectsappears above the box, and only that kind of result is searched. - Click the pill (or delete the chip) to search everything again; your other text stays.
- Crew, category and timeline chips (
@crew,#category,#timeline) belong to the Search page, which has those filters. In the Quick Switcher they leave the list empty.
Tips
- Use command mode when your project list is long and you want pages and actions only.
- Combine:
> newlists the 'New …' actions;> helpjumps straight to Help. - Inside a project, a few actions follow it: 'Add gear to this project', 'Open crew of this project' and 'Archive this project'.
Before you type: saved, recent and continue editing
Opened with an empty box, the Quick Switcher shows where you are likely to go next.
- Saved — queries you starred. The star sits at the right end of the search box once you have typed two characters; click it again to remove the saved search.
- Recent — the queries that last led you to a result. Pick one to run it again.
- Continue editing — the three projects you edited most recently.
- Recent commands — pages and actions you opened from the Quick Switcher, newest first.
- Recent and saved searches are shared with the Search page. Recent searches follow you to your other devices when cloud sync is on; starred ones stay on this device. The Search page's Recent searches list has a Clear button.
Tips
- Star the client name of a long-running production — reopen the palette and the query is one click away.
What it can actually find
The sections the palette can show. If a thing isn't in this list, the Quick Switcher won't show it.
- Projects — by name or client; trashed projects never appear. Picking one opens it.
- Items — gear-list items across your projects, with their category and project; picking one opens the project's gear list at that item.
- Contacts, Device Library (your devices plus the built-in catalogue), Owned Gear (also by serial number), Rental Houses and Time Tracking projects — each opens on its own page at that entry.
- Actions — pages and commands: Home, All Projects, New Project, Global Search, Calendar, Contacts, Device Library, Templates, Owned Gear, Rental Houses, Sub-rentals, Insurance, Time Tracking, Data Management, Shared documents, Dashboard (the Production Dashboard, also found by typing 'analytics'), Accessories, Settings and Help & Documentation.
- Settings — each Settings tab, so 'backup' or 'privacy' lands on the right one.
- Tools — the camera and planning tools (Power Calculator, DoF Simulator, Filter Finder, Data Calculator and the rest).
- PDF Tools — any of the PDF tools by name.
- Export and AI — shortcuts such as 'Export call sheet / briefing' and the AI prompts.
- Theme — type 'theme', 'dark', 'light', 'pink' or 'system' and pick one. It is the only result that does not navigate: the theme changes and you stay where you were.
- Accounting and Bank transactions — the accounting pages and your bank transactions, when your account has accounting.
Tips
- Templates is not in the sidebar — the Quick Switcher is the quickest way there.
- Notes, timeline events, crew members and sub-rentals are not in the Quick Switcher — use the Search page (Cmd/Ctrl + F outside a project).
Habits that pay off
Small patterns that turn the Quick Switcher from 'a thing I sometimes use' into actual muscle memory.
- Reach for Cmd/Ctrl + K before you reach for the sidebar. Within a day, the shortcut feels faster.
- Use the date-prefix naming convention for projects (YYYY-MM-DD Client — Type). The palette ranks by relevance, and a date prefix is a great anchor.
- Use command mode (
>) when you've named a project that conflicts with an action name — the prefix disambiguates. - Use a scope chip (
#gear 18k) when a common word matches across projects, contacts and devices at once. - Star the queries you reach for daily: they wait under Saved every time you open the palette.
The Quick Switcher is for fast navigation. For deeper, content-aware search (project notes, crew, timeline events, sub-rentals) with filter tabs, use the Search page (Cmd/Ctrl + F when not in a project).
