Offline-first guidance for safe gear lists.
Global Search
The dedicated search surface at /search, plus the Quick Switcher
Two search surfaces exist: the dedicated Search page (Sidebar → Tools → Search) and the Quick Switcher (Cmd/Ctrl + K). Both use the same fuzzy matcher across projects, gear, and contacts. Cmd/Ctrl + F is wired to search too: inside a project it jumps to the gear category search, everywhere else it opens the Search page (or puts the caret in its box if you're already there). It works even while you're typing in a text field, so the browser's own find-on-page doesn't open.
Where to Open Search
Two surfaces, one matcher.
- Search page (/search)
- Dedicated, scrollable results list. Open via Sidebar → Tools → Search.
- Quick Switcher
- A popup palette. Open via Cmd/Ctrl + K (or Cmd/Ctrl + P — they share the same surface). Best for jumping to a result without leaving the current screen.
- Any page header with a Search button opens the Quick Switcher too — on phones that's the way in, since the bottom navigation has no search tab.
- Both surfaces use the same matcher, so a query that finds something in one finds it in the other.
Tips
- Quick Switcher is faster for 'I know what I'm looking for' jumps.
- Search page is better when you want to scan results or compare candidates.
- Cmd/Ctrl + F is also a search shortcut: it focuses the category search inside a project and opens the Search page elsewhere — even while a text field is focused.
How the Matcher Works
Result ranking is opinionated but predictable.
- Fuzzy matching tolerates typos — up to 3 for long words, fewer for short ones (Levenshtein-style scoring; a swapped pair or a neighbouring key counts as one).
- A missing or extra space doesn't matter: 'alexamini' finds the ALEXA Mini, 'cine7' the SmallHD Cine 7, 'flow tech' the Sachtler Flowtech — in every device search and picker.
- Multi-word queries match each token independently against title, description, and keywords.
- Title matches outrank description, which outrank keyword, which outrank body content.
- Results are sorted by score, so the best match shows first.
- Beyond the text score, projects get two nudges: recently edited ones rank a little higher (fading over about two weeks), and ones you pick often from the palette keep a small boost. That personal boost lives only in this browser — it is never synced, and a browser that blocks site data simply does without it.
- The Search page fires on any non-empty query; the Quick Switcher only shows its deeper results once you type at least 2 characters.
Tips
- Put the most specific token first ('Alexa Mini' beats 'camera Alexa').
- Shorter, more precise queries usually win over long phrases.
- If a result isn't surfacing, try a synonym or check whether the relevant text actually exists in the record.
What Gets Searched
All the surfaces the matcher reaches.
- Projects — name, client, location, contact, notes, and the camera specs (resolution, codec, aspect ratio, frame rate).
- Gear — item name and details in every project's gear list, the gear-list categories, and your Device Library items.
- Contacts — name, role, aliases, phone, e-mail.
- Crew on each project, owned gear, rental houses, timeline events, and sub-rentals are also indexed. On the Search page, the type chips (All, Projects, Items, Crew, Categories, Contacts, Library, Owned Gear, Rental Houses, Timeline, Sub-Rentals) narrow the list.
- Each result row names up to two fields that matched — for example Renter or Serial number — in the app language, followed by the matching text.
Tips
- Search is case-insensitive — 'arri' and 'Arri' return the same results.
- Numbers are searchable — serial numbers, quantities, model numbers.
- Category-style queries ('lighting', 'audio') narrow to that category.
Keyboard Navigation
Both surfaces are fully keyboard-driven.
- ↑ / ↓ — move between results.
- Enter — open the highlighted result.
- Esc — close the panel (Quick Switcher) or clear the query (Search page).
- Tab — accept the grey inline completion in the Quick Switcher. On the Search page, Cmd/Ctrl + Enter opens the highlighted result in a new browser tab.
Tips
- Arrow navigation stops at the ends of the list — ↓ on the last result stays there.
- Cmd/Ctrl + K is the fastest way to jump between projects without touching the mouse.
Recent Searches
Recent queries are saved locally so a re-run is one click.
- The Search page surfaces recent queries when the input is empty.
- Click any recent query to re-run it.
- Recent searches follow you to your other devices when Cloud Sync is on; saved searches (Save this search) stay on this device.
- Clearing browser/site data wipes the history.
Quick Switcher is the keyboard-first surface; the Search page is the visual one. Pick the one that fits the moment. Cmd/Ctrl + F is wired to search as well — the gear category search inside a project, the Search page elsewhere — even while you're typing in a field.
