About Bookmark
Bookmarks build the navigation panel a PDF reader shows down the side of a document. Entries can be nested to any depth, renamed, reordered, and pointed at a specific page, giving a long file the structure its page numbers alone cannot convey.
The outline is written directly into your local copy of the file. No index of your section titles is created anywhere outside it.
How to use Bookmark
- Open the PDF and review any bookmark tree it already carries.
- Add entries for the sections that matter, setting the destination page for each.
- Nest entries by indenting them under a parent to build the hierarchy readers will expand and collapse.
- Save. The tree is written into the document itself, so it travels with the file.
On a production
A lighting plot book runs to ninety pages covering six sets, and on the day nobody scrolls — they jump. A bookmark per set, with sub-entries for the plan, the rig list and the power calculation, turns a document people give up on into one they can actually use standing at a bench.
Frequently asked questions
- Will the bookmarks survive being emailed or printed to PDF again?
- Emailing preserves them, because they are part of the file. Printing to PDF from a reader does not — that produces a fresh document from the rendered pages and discards the outline entirely.
- How deep can the hierarchy go?
- There is no practical depth limit, but readers display three levels comfortably and more than that becomes harder to scan than the document. Two levels covers almost every real document.
- Do bookmarks and a contents page do the same job?
- No. Bookmarks live in the reader's sidebar and work only on screen; a contents page is printed content. Long reference documents usually want both, which is why the two tools are separate.
