Yes. Saving writes the tree as the file's outline, which Acrobat, Apple Preview, browsers and phone readers show as bookmarks or a table of contents. It replaces the bookmarks the file had, so an entry you deleted is gone from the saved file too.

What happens to bookmarks the editor cannot show, such as links to a website?

They are kept. A bookmark that opens a web address still opens it after saving, unless you change its page number, which turns it into a bookmark to that page. Colours and bold or italic titles are kept too. Each bookmark you save jumps to the top of its page.

Can I reorder entries freely or promote a child to the top level?

Only partly. An entry can be moved up within its own level; there is no move-down, indent or outdent button. To put an entry on another level, delete it and add it again there.

About Bookmark

The bookmark editor reads a PDF's existing bookmarks and shows them as a collapsible tree beside the rendered page. You can add, rename, re-target, nest, move up and delete entries, and saving writes the tree as the file's bookmarks, the navigation panel every PDF reader shows.

The PDF is read, rendered and saved as a new copy inside your browser with pdf.js and pdf-lib. Your bookmark titles never leave this device.

How to use Bookmark

Upload a PDF. Any bookmarks it already carries appear with their target pages, and clicking one shows that page in the PDF Preview.
Step to a page with Prev and Next, then click Add Bookmark — the new entry points at the page on screen. Edit its title and page number in place; Enter confirms, Escape cancels.
Use the icons on an entry to add a child bookmark, move it up within its level, edit it or delete it. Entries with children can be expanded and collapsed.
Click Save Bookmarks and download the file. The tree replaces the bookmarks the file had: a reader's bookmark panel shows exactly the entries in the editor, in the same order and nesting, and clicking one jumps to its page. An entry you collapsed is saved collapsed. If you delete every entry, the saved file has no bookmarks.

On a production

A lighting plot book runs to ninety pages covering six sets, and on the day nobody scrolls — they jump. The editor shows at a glance which bookmarks the file already carries, and clicking one takes you to its page, so you can check that each set's plan, rig list and power calculation is anchored where the crew will look for it.
