About Edit Metadata
Edits the document information fields — title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer — and writes them back. The title field is the one many readers and document management systems display instead of the filename.
Field edits are applied to the file in your browser and written straight back out; the values you type are never sent anywhere.
How to use Edit Metadata
- Load the PDF; existing values are loaded into the form.
- Edit the fields you care about. Title matters most, keywords help internal search.
- Clear any field you would rather leave empty than wrong.
- Save and download the updated document.
On a production
A PDF whose internal title still says 'Untitled-1' or 'Template_v3_FINAL' looks careless in a system that lists documents by title rather than filename. Setting it correctly takes a moment and is the sort of thing clients notice without noticing.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the title field change the filename?
- No, they are independent. The filename lives in your file system; the title lives inside the document. Many readers show the title in the window bar, which is why they can disagree.
- Do keywords help anyone find the document?
- They help document management systems and desktop search indexes, not public web search. For an internal archive of contracts and reports they are worth setting.
- Should I edit the producer field?
- Generally leave it. It records the library that wrote the file and is occasionally useful for diagnosing a rendering problem. If you want it gone for privacy, Remove Metadata clears it along with everything else.
