About Edit PDF
The PDF editor opens a document straight in the browser and lets you write on it — text boxes, freehand ink, highlights and images — then save a new copy with your markup added as annotations. Nothing is uploaded: the file is opened by pdf.js, the open-source PDF engine behind Firefox's built-in viewer, running in this tab.
The document never leaves your device. Editing, rendering and export all happen in the browser tab, so the tool works with the network off and nothing is written to a server.
How to use Edit PDF
- Drop a PDF onto the upload area, or click to browse. Pages are drawn as you scroll to them, so a long document opens without rendering every page first.
- Pick a tool from the toolbar — text, draw, highlight or image — and type, draw or place it on the page.
- Open the sidebar with the first toolbar button to jump between pages by their thumbnails; annotations stay anchored to the page they were drawn on.
- Click Save As. Your markup is added to the file as standard PDF annotations, each with its own appearance and marked to print, while the page underneath stays exactly as it was.
On a production
Most set paperwork arrives as a PDF that is nearly right. A call sheet with the wrong unit base, a camera report that needs a note against the reshoot slate, a location agreement where the dates moved. Marking up the page directly beats regenerating the document from a system somebody else controls.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I redact text in the editor?
- No. Anything you draw or place in the editor sits on top of the page; the text underneath stays in the file and can still be selected, copied and searched. To remove it for good, use Redact PDF, which finds words and patterns, lets you draw boxes, and turns every affected page into an image with the boxes burned in.
- Can I edit text that is already in the PDF?
- No. The editor adds markup on top of the page and cannot change the page's own text or reflow a paragraph; that would take the source document. You can paint over a word with the Draw tool set to white and type the correction in a text box, but the original stays in the file: it can still be selected, copied and searched, and anyone can delete the white stroke. If the old text must not stay in the file, black it out with Redact PDF; the editor cannot remove it.
- Will my annotations survive if the recipient opens the file in Acrobat?
- Yes. Each text box, drawing, highlight and image is saved as a standard PDF annotation that carries its own appearance, so Acrobat, Apple Preview and other standard PDF viewers draw it where you placed it. Each one stays a separate object on top of the page, though: whoever opens the file can select, move, hide or delete it.
