About Flatten PDF
Converts form fields into static page content: each field's value is drawn into the page and the field itself is removed, so the document looks the same but can no longer be edited or refilled. Comments, highlights, drawings, stamps and other annotations are not flattened — they stay in the file, and a recipient can still move, hide or delete them. To take them out, use Remove Annotations.
Flattening reads the filled values from the file in your browser and re-draws them locally. Form contents — often personal data — never transit a network.
How to use Flatten PDF

- Confirm every field holds its final value — after flattening they cannot be changed.
- Flatten.
- Download. The values are now part of the page graphics.
On a production
A filled-in form is not finished until it is flattened. Until then the fields are still editable, and any recipient can change a number and forward it on with no visible trace. Flattening turns a form into a record.
Frequently asked questions
- Can flattening be undone?
- No. The field structure is discarded once the values are drawn into the page. Keep the unflattened original if you might need to revise it — flattening produces a new file, so the original survives unless you overwrite it.
- Does flattening make the file smaller?
- Usually slightly, because the form definitions are dropped. The saving is modest; use Compress if size is the actual goal.
- Will a flattened form still print correctly?
- Better than an unflattened one. Some printers and readers omit form field contents when printing; flattened values are ordinary page content and always print.
- Does it flatten comments and markup too?
- No. Only form fields are flattened. Annotations — comments, highlights, drawings, stamps and the markup Edit PDF adds — stay annotations that any reader can move, hide or delete. Remove Annotations deletes them.
