About Page Numbers
Adds page numbers to every page, with control over position, starting number, number format and typeface. You can skip a cover page, restart numbering partway through, and use formats like 'Page 3 of 42' rather than a bare digit.
Numbering is drawn into the page content locally. Nothing about the document's length or contents is reported anywhere.
How to use Page Numbers
- Load the document.
- Choose where the number sits — any of the six standard header or footer positions.
- Pick a format and a starting value. Set the first numbered page if you want to skip a cover.
- Apply and download.
On a production
An unnumbered PDF is fine on screen and a liability on paper. Once a 40-page insurance schedule has been printed and someone has dropped it, numbers are the only thing that makes it reassemblable.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I start numbering at something other than 1?
- Yes. Set the start value to any integer — useful when the document is one section of a larger set and needs to continue a sequence that began elsewhere.
- How do I leave the cover page unnumbered?
- Set the first numbered page to 2. The cover is skipped and page 2 can either be numbered 1 or 2 depending on the start value you choose, so both common conventions work.
- Will the numbers collide with content already at the bottom of the page?
- They can, on documents with tight margins. Preview before exporting, and if there is a clash move the number to a different corner rather than trying to shrink it.
