About Remove Metadata
Strips the metadata fields a PDF carries invisibly — author, title, subject, keywords, producer application, and the creation and modification timestamps. The visible page content is left exactly as it was; only the document information dictionary and XMP packet are cleared.
The document is parsed and rewritten in your browser, which means the metadata you are trying not to disclose is never disclosed to this tool either.
How to use Remove Metadata
- Load the PDF you are about to send onward.
- Review the metadata the tool found — it is worth seeing what was in there before you clear it.
- Strip the fields and download the cleaned document.
- Confirm with View Metadata if you want positive proof the fields are gone.
On a production
A quote exported from your accounting system can carry your full name, your software licence and the exact minute you generated it. When that document goes out to a client or a rental house, none of that is information you meant to send.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this remove information from the visible pages?
- No. Metadata lives outside the page content. Text printed on the page — a name in a footer, a signature block — is untouched. Use the redaction tool in the PDF editor for content on the page itself.
- Does it strip hidden content like JavaScript or embedded files?
- No, that is a broader clean-up. Use Sanitize PDF, which removes scripts, embedded files and other active content in addition to metadata.
- Will the cleaned file still open normally?
- Yes. Every metadata field is optional in the PDF specification, so a document with none is entirely valid and opens in any reader.
