About Remove Restrictions

Clears the permission flags that block printing, copying, editing and annotation on a PDF that opens without a password. These are owner restrictions, honoured voluntarily by readers, not encryption of the content.

The permission flags are cleared in your browser; the document is not uploaded to a service that would then hold an unrestricted copy.

How to use Remove Restrictions

  1. Load the restricted PDF.
  2. Review which restrictions the tool reports as set.
  3. Clear them.
  4. Download — printing and copying now work in any reader.

On a production

A supplier's datasheet that refuses to be printed, or a manual whose text cannot be copied into a gear list. The document is already open in front of you; the restriction is only stopping you doing ordinary things with it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this different from removing a password?
Yes, entirely. A user password encrypts the content and is required to open the file — Decrypt PDF handles that and needs the password. These restrictions apply to a document you can already read.
Why are these restrictions so easy to remove?
Because they were never a security mechanism. The specification asks readers to honour them voluntarily; the content itself is not protected. They express an intention rather than enforce one.
Am I allowed to do this?
That is a licensing question, not a technical one. Removing a restriction does not grant you rights over the content — check the terms attached to the document if you are unsure.
