About RTF To PDF

RTF to PDF converts Rich Text Format documents into PDF, keeping bold, italic, indentation and paragraph structure. RTF stores formatting as plain-text markup, which makes it unusually portable but leaves it looking different in every application that opens it.

RTF markup is parsed and typeset in the browser. Drafts remain on your own machine throughout the conversion.

How to use RTF To PDF

  1. Add an .rtf file.
  2. Choose the page size for the output.
  3. Convert — character and paragraph formatting is carried across.
  4. Download the PDF.

On a production

Screenplay software and older word processors still export RTF as their lowest-common-denominator format, and it renders differently in every one of them. Fixing the appearance as a PDF means the version you approved is the version the next person reads.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my RTF look different in different programs?
The format specifies formatting but leaves much of the layout to the reading application, so line breaks and spacing vary. Converting to PDF is the standard way to stop that variation.
Are embedded images kept?
Images stored inside the RTF are carried through. Because the format embeds them uncompressed in many cases, an image-heavy document can be surprisingly large before conversion.
Is RTF a good archival format?
It is very portable and readable as plain text, which is a genuine strength. It is a poor choice where exact appearance matters, and that is precisely the gap a PDF fills.
