About Scan Document
Scan Document turns a phone or laptop camera into a page scanner. Edge detection outlines the sheet in the viewfinder, you press the shutter yourself, and the perspective is then corrected so a page shot at an angle comes out square. Up to 50 pages per scan are combined into a single PDF.
The camera feed is analysed frame by frame inside the page and never recorded or uploaded. Captured pages stay in this browser's storage on the device until you export or discard the scan, so an accidental reload does not lose them.
How to use Scan Document
- Allow camera access and place the document on a contrasting surface. Without a camera, “Continue with gallery only” lets you import existing photos instead.
- When the frame locks onto the edges the hint changes to “Tap to capture” — the shot is only taken when you tap the shutter. Capture further pages the same way, or add them with “Import from gallery”.
- Tap “Done” to review each page: drag the corners onto the sheet's edges and tap “Apply”, then choose a filter such as “B&W (Document)” or “Whiteboard” and adjust brightness, contrast or rotation.
- Reorder pages in the strip by dragging or with “Move left” and “Move right”, delete misfires, then tap “Export PDF”. Change the file name if you like (it defaults to Scan-date-time.pdf), tick “Searchable PDF (OCR)” to add a text layer, and tap “Save” to save the PDF to your device.
On a production
Fuel receipts, a signed release and a parking permit all need to reach the production accountant before the end of the week, and none of them will ever see a flatbed scanner. Capturing them on a phone at the unit base, straightened and combined, closes that gap on the day rather than a fortnight later.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the edge detection failing to find my page?
- Almost always contrast. White paper on a white table gives the detector no boundary to lock onto — a dark surface fixes it more reliably than anything else. If the outline is still off, set the corners by hand before tapping “Apply”.
- Does the camera capture automatically?
- No. Edge detection only draws the outline and changes the hint; a page is captured only when you tap the shutter. That way you choose the moment your hand is steady instead of getting a frame blurred by movement.
- Does perspective correction damage the image?
- It resamples the captured pixels to square the page, so there is some interpolation. Filling more of the frame with the document leaves more detail to work with. The uncorrected photo is kept with the page, so “Adjust corners” can re-crop it at any time.
- How do I replace a bad page?
- “Retake” returns to the camera and the new shot is added at the end. Delete the old page and move the new one into its place with the arrows. “Undo last capture” quickly removes the most recent page.
