About Table of Contents
This tool adds a new A4 page headed Table of Contents in front of the first page of your PDF. It lists the entries you type in by hand, each with its section title on the left, the page number on the right and a grey dot leader between them.
The contents page is typeset with pdf-lib inside your browser and written into a new copy of the file. The titles and page numbers you type are never sent to a server.
How to use Table of Contents
- Upload the PDF.
- Under TOC Entries, click + Add Entry, replace the suggested Section 1 with your title and enter its page number. The × button removes an entry.
- Allow for the new page when you enter numbers: it becomes page 1 and every existing page moves back by one. Each number is printed exactly as you type it.
- Click Add Table of Contents and download the result; the file name ends in _toc.pdf.
On a production
A tender document assembled from four departments needs a front page that lists what is inside before a producer will read past it. Typing the sections and their page numbers here takes a minute and produces a printed contents page that travels inside the file, without opening a layout program.
Frequently asked questions
- Do the page numbers account for the contents page itself?
- No. Each number is printed exactly as typed and is not checked against the document. Because the contents page is inserted as the new first page, every original page moves back by one — a section that started on page 4 is now on page 5.
- Are the entries clickable in the finished PDF?
- No. The page holds printed text only, with no links, so a reader on screen cannot jump to a section by clicking it. The tool does not change the bookmarks in the reader's sidebar either.
- Can I build the entries from bookmarks or choose where the page goes?
- No. Every entry is typed by hand, and the page is always inserted at the very front, in A4 with a fixed font and dot leader. To put it after the title page, reorder the pages afterwards with Organize PDF, for example 2, 1, 3, 4.
- How many entries fit?
- About 35. The contents stay on a single page; entries that do not fit at the bottom are dropped without a warning, and long titles are not wrapped. The built-in font cannot set characters outside Western European scripts, such as Cyrillic or emoji.
