About Word to PDF

Word to PDF reads a .docx file on your device and typesets its content again as a PDF at the document's own page size and margins: paragraphs with their bold, italic, underline, colour and size, headings, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, pictures and links, in document order. It is a re-set version of the text, not a copy of Word's own layout.

The document is read and typeset in a web worker on your device and is never uploaded. The tool makes no other network request, with one exception: a document with Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Arabic or Hebrew text makes it fetch a font file from the app's own server, once per script; the document itself is not sent. The converter and its main font are part of the app, so it also works offline.

How to use Word to PDF

  1. Add a .docx file. The legacy .doc format cannot be read: save it as .docx in Word first.
  2. Click Convert to PDF. The converter starts first, which takes a moment; Cancel stops it.
  3. Open the result and check tables, pictures and page breaks first. That is where the re-set output differs most from Word.
  4. Save the PDF, or start over with the next file.

On a production

A crew contact list or a set safety plan was written in Word and has to reach people who will read it on a phone, without anyone editing it by accident. A PDF opens on any device and cannot be changed in passing. When the exact Word pagination matters, such as a contract that cites page numbers, export the PDF from Word itself instead.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my PDF look different from the document in Word?
The converter does not reproduce Word's layout. It sets the text again in one font, so lines and pages break in other places than in Word. Headers, footers, footnotes, text boxes, columns and the document's own fonts are not carried over. Headings 1 to 3 become PDF bookmarks.
How are tables and pictures handled?
Tables are drawn with a grid and equal-width columns; Word's column widths and cell shading are lost. Merged cells across columns are kept. Pictures are placed on a line of their own at their size in the document, scaled down to the text width where needed, even if they floated beside the text in Word.
Are tracked changes and comments included?
Comments are not. Tracked insertions are part of the text and tracked deletions are left out, so the PDF shows the document as if all changes were accepted. Links stay clickable.
Does it handle Chinese, Japanese or Korean text?
No. The text is set in the app's built-in font, which covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic script. For Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Arabic and Hebrew text the converter loads a further font the first time a document needs it; characters of other scripts come out blank. For such a document, export the PDF from Word itself.
