Device Library

Browse, customize, and manage your equipment catalog

Overview

The Device Library is a comprehensive catalog of cinema production equipment — cameras, lenses, lights, monitors, audio gear, batteries, and more. Use it to browse manufacturer specs, create custom devices, and drag items directly into your gear lists.

Note (2026-09-08): REQ-DEV-005 and REQ-DEV-011 describe drag-and-drop that is not shipped. What ships for REQ-DEV-005 is the click flow — "Add to project" on a catalog device, via AddToProjectModal. The library's only drag machinery is a drop TARGET, DroppableCategoryItem: nothing in the feature is draggable — no dnd-kit draggable binding, no draggable attribute — DeviceLibraryPage mounts no DndContext at all, and the one in MobileCategoryDrawer carries no onDragEnd, so no drop could ever be applied. REQ-DEV-011 (reordering within categories) has no implementation of any kind. Both rows are retained as planned scope.

Data Requirements

  • Stock catalog: Bundled in the application; updated with each release
  • Custom devices: Stored in IndexedDB → cloud sync
  • Required fields: Device name (string), category (enum)
  • Optional fields: All structured attributes (weight, power, mount, etc.)

Constraints & Limits

  • Stock catalog rows are never destructively edited — editing a stock device stores a field-level override (your changes win; fields you did not touch still receive catalog updates). A stock device's category cannot be changed in place (it is structural); use "Save as separate custom copy" to fork. Stock devices cannot be deleted, only reverted to the catalog version.
  • Custom device count: Unlimited (all tiers)
  • CSV import supports standard column headers matching device attributes

Offline Behavior

  • Fully available offline — stock catalog is bundled, custom devices are in IndexedDB
  • Custom device changes sync to cloud when connectivity is restored

Dependencies

  • Required by: Projects (REQ-PRJ-005) — adding items from catalog
  • Required by: Templates — template items reference catalog

Accessing the Device Library

Click Device Library in the sidebar, or press Cmd/Ctrl + K and type "Device Library."

Categories

Equipment is organized into 50 categories, grouped into 15 departments. The department is the heading you see in the library sidebar; the categories under it are what the filter narrows to.

The Examples column is illustrative, not exhaustive — searching for any of those names finds the row. Search tolerates punctuation and spelling drift, so OConnor 2575 finds O'Connor 2575D Head; you do not need the apostrophe or the exact model suffix.

Search & Filter

  • Search bar: Type to filter by device name or manufacturer
  • Category filter: Click a category to show only matching devices
  • Sort options: Alphabetical, by manufacturer, or by category

On a phone

Below the tablet breakpoint the whole toolbar collapses to a single row — Filters, the sort dropdown, and the result count — so the device list starts near the top of the screen instead of below three rows of controls.

Tap Filters to open a bottom sheet holding everything the wide layout shows inline: the category / favourites picker, the Show switch between the full catalogue and your own custom devices, the category / brand / attribute chip filters, the stock-vs-custom source filter, and Import, Export, Download template and Reset Library. The Filters button carries a badge with the number of filters currently set, and the sheet's footer button shows how many devices your selection leaves. Nothing is hidden — it is folded.

Device Details

Click any device to see its full spec sheet:

  • Weight, dimensions, power requirements
  • Video outputs, resolution, frame rates
  • Mount type (PL, LPL, EF, E-Mount…)
  • Battery type and runtime estimates
  • Data rates — for a camera, what each codec it records costs in Mbit/s
  • Diffusion — for a diffusion filter, how strongly it works on each axis
  • Verified Source — for a catalog entry, the manufacturer or dealer page the specs above were read from. The full address is shown, and the row opens it in a new tab, so you can check a figure at its origin before you rent or buy on it. Entries whose provenance is not a web page do not show the row.

Diffusion filters

Diffusion glass carries its own Diffusion card, so lines from different manufacturers can be compared without translating between three marketing vocabularies. Every rated line shows:

FieldWhat it tells you
FamilyThe line's marketing name — Black Pro-Mist, Hollywood Black Magic, Allure Mist White…
Effect ClassWhich of the seven published classes it belongs to (White / Black / Warm Halation, Optical Resolution, Warm Resolution, Resolution & Contrast, Atmosphere)
Available GradesThe densities the line actually ships, weakest first
Contrast ReductionHow much it flattens overall contrast
Halation IncreaseHow much glow it throws around highlights and practicals
Resolution ReductionHow much fine detail it softens
Warm ShiftWhether the line warms the image (Tiffen's warm families do; Schneider's do not)
Shadow LiftWhether blacks lift — the axis that actually separates a black mist from a white one
Skin SmoothingHow much it blends blemishes and fine lines
Rating BasisThe manufacturer's own wording the ratings were read from

Each axis is rated None → Minimal → Low → Moderate → Strong. The ratings are not manufacturer scores — no maker publishes numbers — they are a consistent reading of each maker's own published description, and the exact sentence behind every rating is quoted in Rating Basis so you can judge it yourself.

ND, IRND, UV, clear, polarisers, diopters and streak/prism glass carry no diffusion card: they are not diffusion, and rating them on these axes would be meaningless.

Covered lines: the full Tiffen diffusion guide (17 families), the complete Schneider-Kreuznach diffusion & mist range, Tilta Illusion, NiSi Allure Mist and Vaxis VFX.

Data rates

Cameras carry a Data rates card listing every codec the body records with its bitrate. Because every RAW and mezzanine codec bills per pixel, a bitrate is only meaningful together with a raster and a frame rate: the card therefore states the geometry it quoted — "Quoted at 4K UHD 3840×2160 @ 24 fps" — directly above the numbers. The raster is the largest frame the body writes; the frame rate is 24 fps, or the mode's own ceiling when it cannot reach 24.

A codec with no sourced rate is left out rather than estimated, and a rate that is content-dependent is shown as a range prefixed with . For any other sensor mode, frame rate or card size, use the Data Calculator (Tools) — it takes the same figures and works out record time, cards needed and total storage.

Custom Devices

Creating a Custom Device

  1. Click Add Custom Device
  2. Enter the device name and select a category
  3. Fill in attributes (weight, power, mount, etc.)
  4. Click Save

Custom devices appear alongside catalog items and can be added to gear lists identically.

Device Attributes

Each device supports structured attributes:

AttributeDescription
WeightWeight in kg or lbs
Power InputVoltage and wattage requirements
Video PortsSDI, HDMI, IP connections
Mount TypeLens mount compatibility
ResolutionMaximum recording resolution
DimensionsPhysical size (L × W × H)
Stock ValueReplacement/MSRP value in EUR (used for insurance & ATA Carnet)
Country of OriginISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code of the manufacturer's origin country (used for ATA Carnet customs documentation)

Editing & Deleting

  • Edit: Click a custom device → modify fields → Save
  • Delete: Click delete icon on custom devices (catalog devices cannot be deleted)

Editing Catalog (Stock) Devices

You can edit a built-in catalog device directly — there's no need to fork a full copy first. When you change a field on a stock device, the app saves only the fields you changed as a field-level override. The override is stored on your device library, so it syncs to the cloud like the rest of your data.

  • The device shows an "Edited" badge. Its hint reads: "You edited this device. Catalog updates still apply to the fields you did not change."
  • Your overridden fields always win, while every field you left alone keeps receiving updates from newer catalog versions — so a manufacturer-spec correction in a later release still flows into your device for the untouched fields.
  • To discard your changes, use Revert to catalog version — this drops the override and restores the original catalog row.
  • If you want a fully independent device instead of an override, use Save as separate custom copy — this creates a normal custom device you own outright.

Note: A stock device's category is structural and cannot be overridden in place. To move a stock device into a different category, use Save as separate custom copy and set the category on the copy.

Using Devices in Gear Lists

Drag & Drop

Drag a device from the library directly into a gear list category. The device name, weight, and attributes are carried over.

Quick Add

From a gear list's Add Item form, type a device name to search the catalog and add it with one click.

Import & Export

Importing Devices

  • CSV Import: Upload a CSV file with columns matching device attributes
  • Bulk Add: Import multiple custom devices at once from structured data

Exporting

  • Export your custom device library as a JSON backup
  • Share device configurations with team members

Auto Gear Integration

Devices in the catalog are used by the Auto Gear Rules engine — you can set rules that trigger when specific devices are added to a gear list.

Cloud Sync

Custom devices sync to the cloud alongside your projects. Manufacturer catalog data is built into the application and does not require network access.

Tips

  1. Search first: The catalog contains 5,000+ devices — use search instead of scrolling
  2. Custom devices for niche gear: Add items not in the catalog (e.g., specialty rigs, DIY builds)
  3. Complete attributes: The more data you fill in, the better power summaries and PDF exports become
  4. Drag & drop: Fastest way to build gear lists from the library
